Historical Background of Dalipuga

In 1789 when Iligan become a pueblo or town, Dalipuga was already a barrio or balangay. According to the late Padulong Ganat, who was born in 1874, his late father was descendant of Sultan Kalubi, chieftain of Balangay Dalipuga when the Spaniards established a colony in Iligan.

Sultan Kalubi, resided in Sitio Kalubihon. According to information, Sultan Kalubi has 3 children. His companion was from the boundaries of Initao River to Mandulog River. One of his daughters was Princess Dali who was an extraordinary beautiful maiden with the ability in fencing as well as her two daring brothers. The two brothers of Princess Dali died on encounters with the slaves of her Sultan father. Princess Dali acted as the head of several slaves trained as warriors.

When Sultan Kalubi grew old, he wanted that his daughter be married. Princess Dali being born brave agreed on a condition that she must be defeated in a good fight. The winner would be proclaimed as chief of chieftains among the chieftains that entered in the fencing tournament. No one defeated Princess Dali, all were killed, the reason why the soldiers were hesitant to trade with her.

One day, a man was seen drifted along Tag-ibo shoreline. He suffered many wounds with a big wound crushing his face. The man was treated and became slave. It turned out that the survivor was an expert in all kinds of fight tournaments and a master in fencing which even Princess Dali cannot defeat. The new crusader was named Puga.

Sultan Kalubi died with several of his followers in an epidemic. They were buried at Tag-ibo Muslim Cemetery. Then the Spaniards came and were able to befriend the couple headed by chieftain Puga. The chieftain lived peacefully with their followers. The Spaniards especially the historians could testify that an outbreak of epidemic occurred and the couple with several of their followers died mysteriously. The couple were buried at Tag-ibo Muslim cemetery and of that time the place was named Dalipuga to show their love and in memory of their loving and kindhearted chieftains.
